I got this book free when Amazon had an offer of such one day recently.

This story is well named. We know that chess is called the "Game of Kings" and in reading this story one must agree that it is “A Thrilling Modern Reimagining of Pride and Prejudice”. The author uses none of the names or any of the places from Jane Austen’s canon but one will smile in putting names or characteristics to various players in this tale. Readers do not have to have read JA’s tale but it just adds to the flavor a smidgen to know that story in advance. One also does not have to know how to play chess (I do not.) but I am sure that chess players will enjoy all the moves and counter moves in this story. I found that this book captured my attention and I finished it in less than a day. This is a sweet story which one would have no reservations about allowing their teen-aged daughter or grandmother to read.

All the names are new, as I said, but if you know P&P look for Darcy and Elizabeth characters - that goes without saying. But you will also find some of JA’s other memorable characters, i.e., Mr. Collins, Charlotte Lucas, Wickham, Charles and Caroline Bingley and a mishmash of Aunt Gardiner and Mrs. Bennet, etc. But the actors in this tale are not limited to ones which parallel JA’s list. Some are completely unique in not only their names but in their characteristics or behaviors and place in this tale.

Darla Martin, with her chess ranking of 1600, has moved from her parents’ home in FL to live with her 41 year old Aunt Lily and her cousin, Marcia, in Denver. Darla works in a library, and her main interest outside of work is playing chess at the Denver Chess Club. Darla learned chess by observing her three older brothers, who on her 21st birthday gifted her with her own set, bag and timer as a reward for her progress in playing the game. She competes in tournaments and it is at such that she becomes acquainted with chess Grandmaster Mikhael Rabinovich Preobrazhensky, who is ranked 2549. He manages to insult her as a Junior Chess Game player; an insult which she, of course, overhears. Mikhael has come to the USA 14 years previously with his father, Rabin, his brother, Pavel, and the latter’s wife, Margarita. Rabin has managed to become quite wealthy in the USA. Pavel is deceased. There are hints that the family has sought political refuge in immigrating. Later we learn of rumors of something more sinister, BUT remember “don’t believe everything you hear”. (Someone we know of from canon, found herself mistaken is believing herself a good judge of character.)

So our two protagonists have their misunderstandings; and thus make misjudgments about people based on those opinions. A certain charmer, Maxwell Marshall, meets Darla and is only too happy to share his knowledge of Mikhael’s reason for leaving Russia. Then back at Aunt Lily’s home, Darla, is introduced to Aunt Lily’s younger boyfriend, Colin Jackson, a snarky individual who quickly beats Darla in a chess game much to her complete and utter dismay! And cousin, Marcia, has met her Mr. Bingley in one John Hartmann, Mikhael’s friend and colleague.

Things become very much more interesting and intense when Marcia goes to a tournament in Las Vegas. She seems to attract her own set of “groupie” men only to be rescued by a Frederick Sanders. Watch out! Something about never looking one in the eyes – what did he mean by that? Orders to show up at one’s hotel room, room switches and key changes – BUT, I DIDN’T ASK TO HAVE MY ROOM CHANGED! What is going on? Who do I trust?

And now, out of the blue Mr. Grandmaster asks Marla to be his partner in a couples’ tournament in Russia. This story just got more and more intriguing. I enjoyed this story and have to say that, with this being the first book by this author that I have read, I would read others by her. Well done.

(Loved what Mikhael did with Mama’s gift to him.)

Game of Kings A Thrilling Modern Reimagining of Pride and Prejudice eBook Anthea Carson DJ Natelson Reviews

This was a satisfying modern P&P. Hero and heroine well matched in intelligence. I don't play chess, so the nuances of the game meant nothing to me. However, I still enjoyed the book as a romance.
Loved it, thrilling, I wish there was a sequel.
This book is about a long played out game of Chess; being a slow budding romance. It is a Pride & Prejudice variation that is set in modern times.
Surprisingly, it held my attention through to the end..and I am no real fan of Chess.
I liked the book, but on reminiscing about it, it does seem like this P&P variation leads to a couple that will have rough times ahead. With only chess in common, and no history of actually talking about much other than chess, the only thing supporting this couple is that shared interest chess. Oh and sexual attraction of course.

In other words not quite a happy ending that I can believe in.
Chess, crime, love, and suspense. What more could one ask. I cannot compare it with Pride and Prjudice since I have not read that book. Normally I do not read romance novels but I do not really look at this book as one of those formularic novels so popular with some. It stands on its own merits.
As for chess, be sure to look at the Tactics Time books as they are great.
It wasn't what I expected, but I'm glad I kept reading. I found that the story started off slow but got better as the book progressed. The comparison to Pride and Prejudice is a little thin, but it was there. There was definitely an action/adventure/thriller angle, especially at the end. The one thing I think the author got just right was the UST between Darla and Mikhail. It was a clean read, which I definitely liked.
I love Jane Austen, and I loved Anthea's trilogy about The Dark Lake. I wasn't sure how the author of a book like The Dark Lake, which reminds me of Catcher in the Rye meets Go Ask Alice, would handle the wit and dialogue from Pride and Prejudice. She handled it extremely well. I know a little about chess but knew practically nothing about the chess world. It was fascinating to learn about the characters in the chess world and the parallels between their behavior and the English characters from the time of Austen. I recommend this book to Austen fans and to anyone who likes a good quick read that is filled with witty repartee.
