I just realized I never wrote a review on this fabulous book. I read it years ago before I started writing reviews. It was a gross negligence on my part to not write this review sooner. You see, this books ties with Jane Eyre as my all-time favorite novel. I have been reading romance novels for many, many years. I have read a lot of books of many genres really. Most books and plots bleed together in my memory after awhile. I can recall a few amazing scenes and bits and pieces from many of my favorites but I think I can remember this book in its entirety. I have reread it many times. In addition, if I am feeling anxious or worried and can’t sleep, I lie in be with my eyes closed and start this book in my mind from the stagecoach scene and play the “movie” of this book in my mind. It soothes me and sleep soon follows. That may not sound like a good quality but let me assure you this book is not boring at all. This book is just so pleasurable to me that it can block out the bad from real life.

I have enjoyed all of O’Connell’s books but this is her masterpiece. The plot is intricate and exciting and original. I love the long journey from Gaetan’s hate of Katherine because she is white to their deep love. The book is truly action packed and a bit violent which I also love. The epilogue of this novel is the standard by which I judge all others. We get a perfect glimpse at Gaetan and Katherine’s future and their continued love, in a clever and moving way.

If you enjoy romance or even historical fiction, I suspect you will love this book. This is really an amazing book and and I highly, highly recommend it. I hope O’Connell will keep giving us more.

This is the first book I've read in awhile that I have fallen so much in love with that I *have* to write about it. Warning there is sex, violence, and coarse language. None of it is gratuitous, however, and it all serves to bring the book home.

**Some minor plot spoiler in my review** The hero and heroine, Gaetan and Katherine respectively, are believable, deep characters. There's none of the can't-you-see-what's-in-front-of-your-nose shaking you want to do when you can see what's coming and the main characters are blind to it, and there aren't any headdesk moments. There's uncertainty and there's hard decisions, but the characters do the best with what's in front of them--and you can't help but grow to admire them both immensely.

As I was reading, I'll admit I was worried about a happily ever after. This time period--and their situation--was so turbulent and difficult, with many dark decisions and actions made on all sides. I wasn't sure how things could work out happily AND plausibly for Gaetan and Katherine, but they did.

I loved that I could respect and appreciate both Gaetan and Katherine-- I knew they would act smartly and that they would be true to each other. I didn't have to worry about flighty feelings or other things getting in the way. Katherine was strong and a woman to admire. Gaetan was brave and a man to respect.
I love historical romances especially western and native american romances. I cut my reading teeth on the old bodice ripper romances. This novel can't be classified as just a historical romance because it does contain a large amount of historical facts about what the Native Americans faced during their last days of freedom. It tells a heart breaking story of how the prideful and strong Apache people fought for their freedom. It tells heart breaking stories of the abuse and degradation they faced. I loved the couple in this story, Gaeton and Katherine. She's the willful, stubborn daughter of a rich man who raised her along with her five brothers after her mother's death at a young age. She's a tom boy, independent and expects to die a spinster. Gaeton is the warrior who is consumed with revenge against all white people for the suffering and deaths the white race has brought upon his people. The first part of the book is filled with conflict and hate between these two. But slowly and surely, the love come through ending with a strong, fierce love for each other. This book made me sad but then made me happy because I loved the historical aspect and equally enjoyed the love story. I highly recommend this book if you love historical western romances.
