"Shoot Him if He Runs" won't keep you awake at night. For fans of the "Stone Barrington" series, "Shoot Him if He Runs" is a pleasant visit home -- not too demanding, sometimes boring, not overly exciting, sometimes annoying, but comfortable. First time readers should pick something earlier in the series.

"Shoot Him if He Runs" could be described as Travis McGee (a John D. MacDonald character) meets Stone Barrington. In a Travis McGee novel, the sex would have been much less clinical, less offensive, more vivid, and more imaginative. Travis McGee was at least somewhat selective and somewhat of a romantic at heart. I find it odd that I like the Stone Barrington novels, although disliking the two principal continuing characters (Stone Barrington and his sidekick NYPD detective). Barrington is bit too much of a renaissance man--NYPD cop, lawyer, pilot, rich jerk, and sometimes CIA agent. Otherwise, as a person, he has no depth at all, no soul.

More specifically, "Shoot Him if He Runs" never really gets off the ground (a bit of a pun, since aircraft are a recurring element). Stone, et al, travel to the Caribbean Island of St. Marks to find a fugitive rogue CIA agent, for some vague reason (even though there is a CIA station on the island). In the process they variously get in and out of trouble with the local authorities, and the rogue agent eludes them. That's about it.

Often such novels at least contain "educational" details about the setting, geography, history, culture, even wildlife--not so with "Shoot Him if He Runs". Barrington continues to drink vodka gimlets (not rich tropical drinks), and eats paella (a Spanish dish, on a British island). The vehicles on the island are no different than one would find in Manhattan, Toyotas, Mercedes, BMWs, Landrovers (even though most Caribbean islands are crowded with antique vehicles or exotic vehicles which are not imported into the U.S.). If one of the characters had nearly gotten into an accident (forgetting that one drives on the left on British Islands), that would have been (yawn) one of the more exciting events in the novel. But Woods does not even mention this peculiarity. One wonders if Stuart Woods has ever visited the Caribbean.

In the audio version, the chief of island security, a former (Black, French-speaking, Haitian) Tonton Macoute speaks with a German accent. I guess, a German accent is generic for bad guys.

This was just another great read from Stuart Woods. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
The Stone Barrington books seem to get more enjoyable as the series progresses. I loved the characters and the twists the plot took, although a few were predictable.
Hooray. This book was a winner. Great plot and story. No dumb characters like in book 13. Good plot, good chases, good twists.
What's not to like. It has all the components I seek in a good book. This one is actually a re-read for me, while I'm waiting for Stuart to finish his latest one. I tore through this book in just a couple hours. The illusive Teddy Fey (one of my favorite characters) adds to a fast paced exiting story, with a typical Teddy Fey ending. No spoiler alerts from me.
Will Teddy and Holly meet? Like how stories of people and stone has run into before. Hope more stories with daisy
The books are gaining in number #11,#12,#13 etc etc !!!! THE NUMBER OF STARS HAVE DECREASED!!! Nor a good book, please take time off and get back to the author I love
I have enjoyed reading all of the Stone Barrington novels by Stuart Woods. I began reading them in chronological order and somehow missed this one. It involves Stone returning to St. Marks island with Holly Barker, his CIA agent friend and sometime lover, on a spy mission. Dino gets to go along and they get into hot water as usual. Not a lot to the story, but a quick read to allow some down time during a busy retirement for me. *S*
Familiar characters are always comforting as is the island of St. Marks and the people from a previous novel. The story line is simple enough to follow and the climax leaves enough loose ends for another episode. Always entertaining 😊
